Geneseo Slips Past Highlanders on Late Own-Goal

GENESEO, NY – The SUNY Geneseo Knights slipped past the Houghton Highlanders on Tuesday afternoon, 2-1, after a Houghton defender accidentally knocked the game-winning goal into her own cage in the 42nd minute.

The Knights scored the opening goal in the 21st minute when Grace Olczak pulled the ball out of a scrum in front of the net and laced a shot past the Houghton keeper.

Houghton tied the score in the third quarter on penalty corner after the Highlanders inserted the ball to Deb Cross at the top, who passed to Cedar Smith on the near side, who found Hunzinger on the far side, who ripped a shot from near the top of the circle, through a crowd of defenders and into the cage for her seventh goal of the season.

With less than four minutes to play in the third quarter, the Knights inserted a penalty corner and played a lofted ball toward the goal from near the circle.  In an attempt to bat the ball away from the goal, a Houghton defender accidentally deflected the ball out of the air and past Houghton's goalie into the cage for the game-winning goal.
