Men's Tennis Remains Undefeated in Conference with Two Weekend Victories

The Houghton Men's Tennis Team had a big weekend of Empire 8 play picking up two important victories against St. John Fisher and Utica College. The victories keep the Highlanders' undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 start to the conference season.

Houghton started off the weekend with a strong 6-3 victory against St. John Fisher on Friday. The Highlanders' picked up wins at first doubles with Isaac Little and Jaimie Staerkle downing their opponents 8-5, and Micah Schilke and Matt Cicero taking third doubles 8-1. In singles, the match would be clinched with wins by Schilke 6-4, 6-4 at first singles, Webb 6-4, 6-3 at the second spot, Staerkle 7-5, 6-2 at the third flight, and finally Cicero 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at the fourth position. 

The Highlanders' would jump right back into action and continue their winning ways against Utica College Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 team victory. Staerkle/Little (8-3), Webb/Nolan (8-2), and Schilke/Cicero (8-1) would sweep the doubles points at first, second, and third respectively. The dominate play would continue into singles with victories by Schilke at the first position 6-2, 6-1, Staerkle at third 6-0, 6-2, Cicero at fourth 6-3, 7-5, Zach at fifth 6-1, 6-0, and Harley at sixth 6-2, 6-3. 

"My message to the men the whole weekend was 'Find a Way' and they did the job by picking up two wins," Head Coach Zach Shilvock said at the end of the long weekend. "We still have areas to improve on, but we march forward in a good position heading into the final stretch of the season. I look forward to the rematches against these tough conference opponents." 

The Highlanders will bounce back into action Wednesday for a bout against Alfred University before taking some time off for Easter Break.
