Box Score ALFRED, NY— The Alfred Saxons handed the Houghton Highlanders their first loss of the 2022-23 season, 62-48, thanks to an explosive 23-point second quarter.
For three of the four quarters, the game was a near-draw.
The Saxons' Gillian Flint hit a three at the end of the first quarter's buzzer, giving Alfred a 17-14 advantage.
The two teams would play to dead heats in the third and fourth quarters, also, 14-14 and 8-8, respectively.
It would be the second quarter that would prove the difference, as Alfred outscored the Highlanders, 23-10. In that quarter, the Saxons would shoot a red-hot 56 percent from the floor, including 4-for-6 (67%) from three-point range, while Houghton would knock down only 25 percent of their shots, including an 0-for-7 effort from beyond the arc.
