Field Hockey Continues Record-Setting Season with Big Win Over Medaille

HOUGHTON, NY – Nine different Houghton players found the back of the cage on Wednesday afternoon, as the Highlanders upended the Medaille Mavericks, 10-1, for their 11th victory of the season and sixth win in the Empire 8 conference.

Since moving to the NCAA in 2011, the Highlanders have never had more individual players score a goal in a single game.

Peyton Bentley kicked off Houghton's scoring early, depositing a shot into the cage on an assist from Jace Hunzinger in the second minute of the game.

From there Houghton scored in spurts, scoring six more goals over a 6:30 stretch, to build a 7-0 lead before the 18 minute mark.

Elzandie Du Plessis, who scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season, would be the only Houghton player to log two goals on the night.

NOTABLE STATS
>> The 10 goals scored by the Highlanders boosted their total to 58 goals on the season, tying the record for the most scored by a Houghton field hockey team set by the 2003 team in 18 total games.  This year's Houghton team has scored more goals per game (3.63) than any team in Houghton history, to date.

>> Hunzinger's assist gives her 17 on the season, matching the single-season Houghton record set by Brieanna Claybourn in 2003.  She is currently one assist away from tying the all-time Houghton career record of 30, which is shared by Claybourn ('00-'03), Kristen Mazzeo ('03-'06) and Rochelle Hershey ('99-'02).

>> Bekah Davie picked up her 16th goal of the season, which currently ranks her fifth on the all-time single-season Houghton leader-board.

>> Bentley's opening goal was her 10th tally of the season.  This is the first season in Houghton's NCAA-era that two players (Bentley and Davie) have recorded double-digit goals-scored.  In 2021 the pair came within a goal of accomplishing the feat, as Davie notched 10 scores and Bentley nine.

>> Houghton's 11 victories is the most by the team since 2005 (12-4).
