HOUGHTON, NY – Fighting for a chance at the #2 seed in the conference tournament, and the most wins in program history since 2005, the Houghton Highlanders pulled out an incredible come-from-behind victory, scoring three goals in the second half to defeat the visiting Washington & Jefferson Presidents, 4-2.
Trailing by a goal just over a minute into the second half,
Peyton Bentley broke free in the offensive half, slotted a ball to a streaking
Bekah Davie, who slammed home her 17
th goal of the season to tie the game. Davie's goal moves her into a tie for fourth place on the Highlanders' single-season goals-scored leader board.
The game remained knotted at two, until, with just over two minutes remaining,
Elzandie Du Plessis took over.
Cedar Smith inserted a Houghton corner to the top of the circle, where
Deborah Cross passed to Du Plessis on the left wing, who ripped the game-winning shot past the Presidents' goalie.
Only 15 seconds later, with the Highlanders pressuring in the offensive third, and the Presidents trying to clear, Du Plessis intercepted a clearance attempt, touched the ball inside the circle and ripped a shot into the back of the cage to put Houghton up for good, 4-2.
