Highlanders Weekly Update: January 31-February 5

Today we take a look at how the teams faired last week and preview what is upcoming for the Highlanders.

MEN'S BASKETBALL             WOMEN'S BASKETBALL                  INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
 
MEN'S BASKETBALL (1-16) (1-7 E8)

Last Week: The Highlanders went 0-3 in a week that featured a pair of run-ins with the Alfred Saxons and a trip to Elmira.
Tuesday, the Highlanders traveled to Alfred University where they Saxons took the victory 89-53. Friday, the team was defeated 86-76 at the hands of the Soaring Eagles. On Saturday, the Highlanders returned home and dropped a 73-34 ball game to the Alfred Saxons.

Tuesday, the Saxons jumped on the Highlanders by opening up a 25-4 lead that proved to be too much for the Highlanders to overcome on the road. Jajuan Preaster gave Houghton a spark with 11 points off the bench in the loss.

On Friday, the Highlanders faced Elmira and their 3-2 zone. After struggling in the first half and facing a 19-point halftime deficit, Houghton rallied in the second half to close the margin to 2 points before Elmira could escape with the win. Jajuan Preaster led the Highlander scoring effort with 20 points on just 13 shot attempts while Jordan Holmes added 18 of his own including three shots from downtown. Josh Jordan and Preston Bax III added 13 and 11 respectively. Holmes led the rebounding effort with 7, while Bax, Preaster, and AJ Bass each contributed 3 assists on the night.

Saturday, the team could not get an outside shot to go against a strong Alfred defense. Josh Jordan and Preston Bax III led the scoring efforts with 8 apiece. Jordan added 7 rebounds and 3 steals in the contests. Senior, Andrew Wright gave Houghton a spark with 3 steals of his own on the defensive end.  

This Week: The team will continue with Empire 8 play as they host St. John Fisher on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Elmira on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Keuka on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (7-11) (1-8 E8)
Last Week: The Women's team went 0-3 on the week as well. Tuesday, Alfred's second-half run took down the Highlanders on the road 61-43. Friday, the team took Elmira to overtime in and exciting game, that resulted in a 59-58 victory for the Soaring Eagles. Saturday's home game against Alfred ended in a score of 61-47, but the Highlanders carried a 5-point lead into the half.

At Alfred, Alexis Klohr led the scoring effort with 13 points. Carlee Miller secured the interior with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, while Amanda Jackson dished out 3 assists to lead the Highlanders.

At Elmira, three Highlanders posted double-figure scoring totals including Carlee Miller (16), Amanda Jackson (13), and Alexis Klohr (10). Klohr added a career high 12 rebounds while also adding 4 assists and 6 steals.

In Saturday's home game against Alfred, the Highlanders were led by Carlee Miller's 14 point, 12 rebound double-double. Amanda Jackson added 11 points, and Abby Guiher led the team with 3 assists.

This Week: The team will continue with Empire 8 play as they host St. John Fisher on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., Elmira on Friday at 5:30 p.m., and Keuka on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
 
INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Last Week: The Highlanders traveled to Rochester on Friday for the RIT Invitational which featured Roberts Wesleyan, Oswego State, Alfred University, Fredonia State, RIT and Houghton. The Highlander Women finished in a tie for 2nd overall while the men took 5th.

The Highlanders posted a collection of top-5 performances in the meet individually that was highlighted by Amerrah Horne-Vaden breaking her 60m school record with a new time of 7.94 seconds which qualified her for the All-Atlantic Regional Meet.
