Houghton Hosts Special Olympics Regional Bocce Tournament

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Despite the cool morning temperatures of late September, excitement and energy filled the field at this year's Super Regional Bocce Tournament, hosted by the Houghton University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in partnership with Special Olympics New York.

This year's tournament featured 10 participating teams and 150 athletes competing across 12 bocce courts that stretched the length of Burke Field's sideline.

"A chilly start on Saturday didn't keep things from heating up at this year's bocce competition," said Michael Paglicci, Director of Program for the Western Region, Special Olympics New York. "This is one of my favorite events to look forward to each year, and you all made it a memorable one. In fact, it was the largest bocce event we've hosted at Houghton since the event's inception seven years ago (or so)."

Now in its seventh year, the annual tournament continues to grow in both size and spirit. Houghton's SAAC representatives coordinated nearly 100 student volunteers from athletic teams and other campus programs to support the event.

"It's always a quick turnaround from when we start the semester to when this event happens," said Deanna Hand, SAAC advisor. "But it always comes together to be a successful event, with volunteers eager to participate year after year."
She added, "We are blessed to be able to offer our facility to this amazing group. Over the years, we've built partnerships and friendships that will last a lifetime."

The Super Regional Bocce Tournament remains one of Houghton University's most cherished community collaborations, celebrating sportsmanship, inclusion, and the enduring partnership between Houghton University Athletics and Special Olympics New York.
