Women's Soccer Ties with Elmira

Houghton, NY– The Houghton College Women's soccer team's game against Elmira ended in a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon .

The first half was fast paced and eventful as both teams were able to find the back of the net within the first 20 minutes of the game. Houghton jumped on top first in the 12th minute with a goal off the foot of Sarah Potocki. This 1-0 lead did not last very long though as the Eagles of Elmira raced to the other end of the field and found a goal of their own from Claire Elfring, tying the game at 1-1. The rest of the half would consist of both teams attempting to gain an advantage, however neither one was able to break the tie going into the half.

The second half picked up right where the first left off, with both teams working their hardest to gain an advantage. Both teams were able to get several shots on goal but all were erased by the goal keepers. As this stalemate continued, the Highlanders seemed to have a golden opportunity to gain the lead with a penalty kick from Moriah Steffan. As the crowd held their breath, hoping to see another goal, she took the PK and it ultimately was saved and the Eagles took a huge sigh of relief as the game continued with a 1-1 score. This would be the last time in regulation that either team would have a chance to take the lead.

This brought the game to overtime which was filled with excitement for the Highlanders as they were able to attempt 8 shots in the OT periods. However, Nevaeh Winston was determined to not let a single one find the back of the net. Her superb defense allowed the Eagles to survive both OT periods, ultimately leading the game to finish in a tie.

With the tie, the Highlanders move to 0-1-1 in Conference as they prepare to face Hilbert on Tuesday
