Fredonia, NY– The Houghton College Men's team dropped their Fredonia tournament opening game to Buffalo State at 3-1 on Friday afternoon.
The Bengals got on the scoreboard first with a goal off the foot of Nemanja Simic to take a 1-0 lead in the 5thth minute of the first half. Jamal Belarj followed this up with a goal of his own in the 34th minute to give Buffalo State a 2-0 lead going into half.
Theo Pencic would start the second half with a goal 7 minutes into seconds into the half, putting the Highlanders in a 3-0 hole with 33 minutes left in the match. Houghton tried to get out of their slump offensively throughout the night but was only able to attempt 6 shots on goal. Nevertheless, their efforts would not be in vain as Andy Loomis would score in the 73rd minute of the match. However, the Highlanders were not able to mount a comeback and would ultimately lose the match 3-1.
With the loss, the Highlanders dropped to 0-3 on the season. They will be taking on the host, Fredonia, in the second game of this tournament tomorrow afternoon.
