Houghton, NY– The Houghton College Men's soccer team traveled to the Lions of Penn State Behrend Tuesday night for a break from Empire 8 play for the night.
The first half proved to be the defensive battle that both teams and fans expected from this match, PSU Behrend had the upper hand on the Highlanders as they led the shot margin 8-3 in the first half. Although both teams were able to get shots off, both goalies kept the nets unfazed leaving both teams scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
The second half began in the same fashion with both teams trying to exploit the others weakness, neither team able to gain an advantage. As the game reached less than 10 minutes left, it looked as if overtime was inevitable. However in the 82nd minute of the game Alex Kalivoda was able to find the back of the net for the Highlanders, giving the highlanders a 1-0 lead with less than 8 minutes to go. As the Highlanders prepared for victory, the Lions picked up the pace and played frantically, trying to find a game tying goal. Less than 2 minutes later, their prayers were answered with a goal from Tyler Vandemerwe in the 84th minute, tying the game 1-1. This would be our final score in regulation as the clock ticked to 0:00 and both teams prepared for OT.
This would not be Houghton's first experience in overtime this season, having won their previous two matches that went into extra time. Hoping to find the same fate as previously, the Highlanders applied defensive pressure as they only allowed the lions one shot in the first 10 minute overtime period. Although Houghton showed their defensive prowess, they were unable to get a shot of their own, leaving the first overtime tied 1-1 as they prepared for the final 10 minutes of the match. With the game on the line, both teams came out in a frenzy attempting to get the Golden Goal and ultimately a victory for their team. As the clock ticked Matthew Romesberg Jr. would find their second shot of the OT which would find the back of the net and give the Lions a 2-1 victory over the Highlanders
With the loss, the Highlanders drop to 5-8 on the season as they prepare to play St. John Fisher at Burke Field on Saturday afternoon.
