Men's Tennis Drops Two Matches on Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Houghton men's tennis lost twice on Tuesday, dropping a 7-2 score to Grove City in the morning and losing 6-3 to Adrian College to close the day.

In the match against Grove City, Micah Schilke and Ethan Yung were the sole winners. After the Highlanders were swept in the three doubles matches, Yung pulled out a win in third singles, while Schilke won his three set match at fifth singles. Dylan Scherer played a tough match at second singles, losing in three (6-4, 2-6, 5-10). Freshman Adam Brown won an exhibition at seventh singles and transfer Ben McKay won an exhibition at eighth singles.

The Highlanders finished the day with a 6-3 loss to Adrian, but got wins from the third doubles tandem of Matthew Cicero and Micah Christensen and second singles (Scherer) and third singles (Yung). Scherer won 3-6, 6-1, 10-1, while Yung took his match 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. Jake Fisler battled his first singles opponent tough, before losing 2-6, 5-7. Schilke also produced a strong match at fifth singles, losing 3-6, 6-2, 4-10.

"[Adrian] was a really good match for us. We had a lot of close competition; we won some and we lost some. But altogether we performed pretty well and had a few great wins," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner. "Third doubles came out aggressively and clinched a tight 8-6 win. Second and third singles both fought back from a set behind, dominated the second set, and pulled out third set tiebreakers. We are starting to see glimpses of the kind of tennis this team is capable of, and it's exciting stuff."

The Highlanders battle John Carroll University on Wednesday at 8 a.m.
