Strong Play Not Enough for Men's Tennis

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Houghton men's tennis put in strong performances throughout their match with John Carroll University but came up on the short end of an 8-1 score on Wednesday.

Dylan Scherer came up with the lone victory (6-2, 6-3) in second singles. Jake Fisler battled his first singles opponent through three sets before ultimately losing 5-7, 6-4, 7-10. Micah Christensen also lost a close three-set match in sixth singles (6-3, 3-6, 4-10). Micah Schilke lost his fifth singles match in three sets, while the second doubles tandem of Schilke and Ethan Yung also came close with a tie-breaker loss.

"Today was a bit tough for us; we had a slower start in doubles," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner. "We had a few teams make a push, for instance second doubles fought back to a tie- breaker from 2-5 down but weren't quite able to take the match. We had some opportunities in singles, but just couldn't quite convert. However Dylan Scherer played an excellent match at second singles to gain us our only win of the day. We've got a little more rest before our next match, which I think will be really good for the team and help us be ready to go tomorrow morning."

The Highlanders are back in action Thursday at 8 a.m. when they take on Oglethorpe University.
