HOUGHTON, NY – Just over 4:30 into the first overtime period
Hannah Daniels received a penalty corner pass from
Zoey Kasper, stepped inside the circle, and ripped a clean shot past the keeper to give the Houghton Highlanders a 1-0 victory over the Elmira Soaring Eagles.
Primarily a defensive battle from the outset, both teams combined for only 15 shots through regulation.
But in the overtime period, with the number of players reduced to seven-a-side, Houghton created several chances but were continually turned away by outstanding saves from Elmira keeper, Liz Shephard.
Elmira countered with an opportunity of their own, but Houghton's
Sarah Olandt stopped a shot by Elmira's Janie Kempf.
With the ball in the Houghton defensive end, and Elmira pressing to score, Daniels released a quick counter to
Caitlin Jennings, who beat several Soaring Eagles defenders as she raced up the field before finally being pulled down inside the circle.
After a failed corner attempt where Shephard blocked two Houghton shots, Kasper took another corner, played the ball to Daniels at the top of the circle, who finished the game with a hard shot into the cage.
