St. John Fisher Outlasts the Highlanders

Houghton women's tennis lost a conference matchup, 7-2, against St. John Fisher on Wednesday afternoon.

Competition began fairly even, with Houghton taking first doubles and Fisher securing second and third doubles. First doubles, senior Catie Moore and freshman Elise Swanson, won their match 8-6 while second doubles dropped 3-8 and third 1-8 to Fisher. This marks Moore and Swanson's fourth consecutive win at first doubles and their overall season record is 6-3. 

Houghton was only able to grab one more match during the day. Alicia Cline, No. 4 singles, won her match in three sets. Cline came back after being down in the first set to win her match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cline is 3-1 in conference play this year. Moore also playeda  close match, coming up just short with a 5-7, 5-7 score at No. 3 singles. Erin Haley put up a 3-6 3-6 match at No. 2. No. 5 Tessa Brown took her first set to a tiebreak before falling 6-7 (3-7) 2-6. 

"It was a good match; we lost but we did lots of things well today. If the girls can keep performing at this level and playing with the confidence and drive we saw today, we have good reason to be optimistic going into latter half of the fall season," said Head Coach Tonya McGraner.

The Highlanders hit the courts again on Monday against Allegheny in Meadville, Pa.. Play begins at 4:30 PM.
