ONEONTA, NY – It took four full quarter, two overtime periods, and a penalty shootout, but the Hartwick Hawks pulled out a victory over the Houghton Highlanders, 1-0, in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.
The Hawks controlled the majority of possession in the Houghton end throughout regulation, notching 30 shots to the Highlanders one, but Houghton goalie
Sarah Olandt and a stingy defense continually turned aside the Hartwick advances.
Houghton finally gained some momentum in the extra periods, equally Hartwick's shot total in the first overtime, 3-3, and creating multiple key scoring opportunities in the final 10 minutes as they outshot the Hawks, 5-1. But Hartwick goalie Allyson Osborne turned away all seven Houghton shots in the extra time, leading to the shootout.
After Houghton's
Grace McBride made the first stroke, Hartwick's Bella Wheeler answered. Osborne then stopped the next three Highlanders shots while the Hawks found the back of the cage on their next two to win the game.
