The Highlanders' Women's Tennis team fell to Division II Roberts Wesleyan 8-1 in their Tuesday evening match. The Houghton ladies were outmaneuvered in doubles, with first and second doubles posting scores of 2-8 and 0-8 against the Redhawks. Third doubles, played by
Tessa Brown and
Maddison Soth, managed to scrape out four games before Roberts Wesleyan closed out the match 8-4.
The Highlanders had a hard time keeping up in singles, and a couple of quick singles matches saw the day go in favor of the Redhawks. However, there was one major upset yet to come. Sophomore
Tessa Brown was solidly in the lead during her singles match when the team overall victory had been decided. Brown's top-notch footwork and mental steadiness saw her through to a commanding victory at No. 5 singles. Brown's final score was 6-2, 6-1. This marks the first ever match victory against Roberts Wesleyan in Women's Tennis program history.
"Tessa played some stellar tennis today. She really moved well, controlled points, and kept her head clear during her match. A well-deserved victory against a really good team!" Says Head Coach
Tonya McGraner
The Highlanders' don't have much time to recover from today's match. They are back in action tomorrow playing their second conference matchup of the season. The competition against Nazareth College (away) begins at 4pm.Â
