Knights Spoil Women's Soccer Opener

HOUGHTON, NY Houghton women's soccer ran into a talented and experienced group from Geneseo on Friday and dropped their season opener by a score of 3-1.

Kealy DeForest (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) put the Highlanders on the board first one minute into the game as she ran onto a ball in the box and redirected a shot past the keeper with the outside of her right foot.

Six minutes later, Geneseo's Domenica Piccoli tied the game, then struck again at the 21-minute mark to give the Knights a lead going into halftime.

The aggressive Knights offense kept the Highlanders on defense for much of the second half before breaking through for their third goal of the game to Geneseo freshman Faye Higgins.

COACH'S CORNER

"It was a blast to get out and play against a very good team like Geneseo right off the bat. Despite dropping this first game, we learned that we have a team that is going to get better and really has some potential. I am excited to coach this group and was encouraged by our newcomers and their ability to jump into the collegiate game and compete at a high level. These ladies did a nice job accepting coaching and applying halftime adjustments.

"This can be a good team, but we just have to put in the work.

"I am excited that we are able to get back and compete tomorrow as we head to Oswego. We will need our depth tomorrow to give us fresh legs after playing a hard fought game today." –Coach Nikki Elsaesser
