ONEONTA, N.Y. – Houghton women's basketball lost on the road in conference play against the Hawks of Hartwick College, 63-73, on Saturday afternoon.
With a layup in the paint by
Brittany Lenart less than 30 seconds into the game, Houghton would be the first to score. Hartwick would be quick to follow suit, with another layup a little more than 15 seconds later. The first quarter would find the Highlanders and Hawks battling for dominance, tying each other 4 more times before going into the second quarter with 14 points apiece. The second quarter would closely follow the first, but the Highlanders would fall behind by 3 points going into halftime (31-34).
Going into the third quarter, neither team would trail behind the other by more than 3 points. With a layup by
Leslie Moose in the final 30 seconds of the quarter, the Highlanders would find themselves going into the fourth quarter up by 2 (50-48). In the early moments of the fourth quarter, the Hawks would be quick to close the gap and briefly take back the lead before a series of layups and free throws found the Highlanders up again by 5 with 6 minutes left. However, with a little less than 4 minutes remaining, the Hawks would take control of the court and go on to outscore the Highlanders 18-3.
