HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Houghton women's tennis team continued their season with an 8-1-home loss to highly ranked Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday.
Stevens began the match with a commanding doubles lead, besting second doubles team
Amanda Carl and
Erin Haley 8-2 in the first match to finish on Saturday afternoon. Following a win at first and third doubles Stevens led the Highlanders 3-0 going into singles.
After some competitive singles play, the Steven's Ducks overcame Houghton's
Tori Noller (6-0, 6-0) and
Erin Haley (6-1, 6-0), to clinch the match. However Highlander's senior
Amanda Carl was able to pull out a hard-fought win against the Ducks at number three singles (6-3, 2-6, 11-9) to wrap up the team match.
"I'm very proud of the girls today," said Coach
Tonya McGraner, "they fought hard down to the last one of them. We got a bit of a slow start in doubles today, but the girls showed a lot of determination and grit during singles. I especially want to point out
Amanda Carl for her win. She showed a lot of mental fortitude in a really tight match and I think she played her best of the season so far. That was a huge win for her and I hope she is very proud of herself; I know the team and I are."
The Highlanders will face off against St. John Fisher in Rochester, NY on Tuesday (Sept. 18).
