HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Ben Lawrence staked Houghton men's soccer to an early 1-0 lead, but the Brockport Golden Eagles battled back to claim a 2-1 overtime win Tuesday at Burke Field.
The teams battled back and forth early with neither side gaining much of advantage. The Highlanders finally broke through in the 16th minute, when a loose ball in the box was headed down by
Jeremy Newswanger and headed off the crossbar and into the goal by Lawrence.
The momentum quickly switched to the Golden Eagles, who found themselves with numerous chances through the remainder of the first half. Houghton was able to clear away most of the threats, received some favorable bounces, and key saves by substitute keeper
Bryson Robinson that kept the score at 1-0.
The Highlanders opened the second half with key possessions that kept them in the attacking third, but they couldn't find space to stretch their lead. Brockport pulled even in the 75th minute when a cross into the box was miss-hit by a Houghton defender and went into the back of the net.
Eight minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles produced the game-winner off a penalty kick after a Houghton defender took down the Brockport forward in the box.
