Women’s Soccer Settles for Tie with Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Houghton women's soccer was unable to find a win in conference play, tying Elmira College 1-1 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

The Soaring Eagles pressured the Highlanders throughout the first half and put several shots on goal, but the score was 0-0 at the half. Houghton settled down in the second half and turned up their own pressure, outshooting Elmira 13-3 after the break. That pressure was rewarded in the 81st minute when Jessica Beattie slipped a ball to Tess Schilke, who beat her defender and placed a shot into the top netting. However, the hosts didn't fold and found the equalizer with a 30-yard shot just two minutes later.

Houghton continued to control play through the two extra sessions but couldn't break through with the winner. Their best chance came with five minutes left in the second overtime. The Elmira keeper took out the Houghton forward as she came in on goal, granting a penalty kick for the Highlanders. But the PK by Brielle Kwarta was sent wide left.

COACH'S CORNER
"We played a very poor first half. To Elmira's credit, they came out to play and out performed us. The second half and OT was a different story, but we struggled to finish. A bright spot was Tess Schilke's first collegiate goal." -- Head Coach David Lewis
