HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's lacrosse jumped out to a 13-0 lead and cruised to a 16-3 win over visiting Wells College in the Highlanders' season opener Tuesday night.
Jenny Zacchigna led the Highlanders with five goals on a game-high nine shots and finished with five draw controls.
Chandler Jones added a goal and seven assists, while
Meghan Oswald had three goals and three draw controls. Kelsey Ashley added two goals and two assists and
Alyssa Strom finished with two goals and five draw controls.
Brielle Kwarta and
Marissa Hews (2) had the other Highlander goals.
Alison Clark made one save in net to get the win.
Shots went in favor of the Highlanders, 29-11, including a 23-4 margin in the first half. Houghton possessed 15 of the 21 draw controls, thanks to the strong play of Oswald in the circle.
Houghton (1-0) stays at home for its next contest, hosting SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday, March 11 at 3 p.m.
