HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- After battling back from four goals down late in the game to tie the score, Houghton women's lacrosse saw the game slip away just 46 seconds into overtime in an 11-10 loss to SUNY Polytechnic University on Saturday.
The game could not have been more evenly played. The score and most of the shots went back and forth throughout the first half. The score was tied at four at the half, with Jenny Zacchigna scoring three times and
Meghan Oswald adding the fourth Houghton goal. The Highlanders' third and fourth goals came in the final 45 seconds of the half.
The momentum from the end of the first half continued for Houghton as Oswald netted her second of the day just a minute into the half for a 5-4 Houghton lead. But it didn't take long for the momentum to change sides. The Wildcats answered just a minute later and added four more goals to go up 9-5 midway through the half. Houghton wasn't about to pack it in, though, with Zacchigna and Oswald again tallying back to back goals to pull the Highlanders within two. After the Wildcats scored with 10:22Â to go to increase the margin to 10-7, Houghton looked to be in trouble. But they again failed to fold.
Zacchigna scored her fifth of the day with 5:12 remaining and scored once more just 33 seconds later to trim the deficit to one goal.
Chandler Jones provided the heroics with 20 seconds to go. With her team playing a man down, Jones tallied her second goal of the season to even the score at 10 apiece.
However, the Wildcats were able to control the draw to start the overtime period and a shot from directly in front of the goal found the back of the net to end the game.
Zacchigna finished with six goals, an assist, eight draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Jones had a goal and three assists, while
Meghan Oswald contributed three goals, eight ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
Shots were even at 23 apiece. Houghton finished with a 27-24 advantage in ground balls.
Alison Clark made six stops in net.
Houghton (1-1) is back in action at Cazenovia on Wednesday, March 15 at 4 p.m.
