HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Jennifer Zacchigna tied her own school record with seven goals and
Chandler Jones finished with eight assists, but it wasn't enough to push Houghton women's lacrosse past Hartwick College as the Highlanders lost to the Hawks 13-11 Friday night on Burke Field.
Zacchigna opened the scoring with a goal in the first minute, and after a Hawk goal,
Meghan Oswald scored to give the Highlanders a 2-1 advantage. The rest of the half would go back and forth between the two squads. Hartwick was able to pull ahead 5-3 with back to back goals with just under 10 minutes to go in the half, but Houghton scored four of the next five goals, three coming from Zacchigna, to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
Houghton held a 14-13 first half shots advantage.
Halftime clearly shifted the momentum back toward the Hawks as the visitors used two three-goals spurts, separated by a second goal from
Marissa Hews, to take a 12-8 lead with 9:08 left. Houghton made it interesting in the final minutes, with Zacchigna finding the net three more times over the final seven minutes.
In addition to her seven goals, Zacchigna tallied nine ground balls, five caused turnovers and five draw controls.
Chandler Jones finished with a season-high eight assists. Hews and Oswald each scored twice.
Alison Clark stopped six shots in net.
Team shots were even at 23 apiece. Houghton had a 35-26 advantage in ground balls, won the turnover battle 21-29, and cleared 14 of 18 attempts. Draw controls were also tied at 13.
The Highlanders (1-5; 0-2 E8) return to action Saturday when they host Stevens Institute of Technology.
