ELMIRA, N.Y. -- For two quarters Houghton men's lacrosse played even with Elmira College, but the host Soaring Eagles scored 12 of the game's final 13 goals in the second half to a take a 16-5 win over the Highlanders on Wednesday in E8 action.
The teams went back and forth in the first quarter with the score tied at two after the first 15 minutes.

Cole Chapman each scored for the Highlanders. The second quarter opened with a goal from
Paul Chapman, and after two goals by the Soaring Eagles,
Cole Chapman scored his second of the afternoon to make the scored 4-4 at the half. Elmira had a slim 23-21 edge in shots in the first half.
Whatever momentum Houghton might have gained in the second quarter was gone as the minutes ticked past in the third stanza. Elmira scored three times over the first 11 minutes of the quarter and took the wind out of Houghton's sails with two goals in the final 16 seconds of the quarter.
Four-straight goals to start the fourth, pushed the deficit to 13-4 before
Cole Chapman was able to break the string of Elmira scores with his third of the contest. Elmira finished the scoring with three goals in the last seven minutes.
Elmira outshot the Highlanders 26-8 in the second half. Houghton could manage just four of 15 clears in the final 30 minutes. Groundballs for the game were dominated by Elmira, 51-33.
Jorge Medina made 16 stops in net.
Houghton (1-7; 0-2 E8) is back in action Saturday, April 1 at Utica College.
