Chapman's Seven Goals Not Enough as Men's Lacrosse Drops 15-13 Decision at Alfred State

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Houghton men's lacrosse let a four-goal lead slip away late in a 15-13 loss at Alfred State on Wednesday.

Paul Chapman had a hattrick by halftime as the Highlanders broke open a back and forth contest by scoring the final three goals of the half to take an 8-5 lead into the break. Austin Andryshak scored twice, while Josh Bailey, Cole Chapman and Jared Limbeck each added one goal in the opening 30 minutes.

The lead grew to 9-5 when Chapman scored his fourth of the contest just 30 seconds into the second half. But any momentum the Highlanders had quickly shifted to the Pioneers when they scored three times over the next two minutes. Chapman was able to convert a man-down goal to put the lead back to 10-7.

The Pioneers outscored the Highlanders 4-1 over the remaining minutes of the third quarter to tie the score at 11, with the final tally coming with just one second on the clock.

Chapman's seventh goal made it 12-11 three minutes into the final quarter, but the Pioneers tied it up five minutes later and then scored three more over the next two minutes to put the game away. Jared Limbeck closed the scoring with 3:17 left.

Limbeck and Andryshak each finished with two goals and two assists. Chapman led the team with 15 shots, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Chris Bucciarelli had 12 stops in goal.

Shots were in favor of the Highlanders, 37-36, but the Pioneers outshot Houghton 22-13 in the second half. Alfred State had a 41-39 edge in ground balls.

Houghton (0-2) travels to Wells for their next contest on Saturday, March 12 at 1 p.m.
