Big Second Quarter Carries Wells to Win over Highlanders

AURORA, N.Y. -- Wells College scored six times in the second quarter to break open a close game and cruised to a 21-9 win over Houghton men's lacrosse Saturday.

The Express scored the game's first goal before freshman Cole Chapman (Kemptville, ON, Canada, North Grenville District) got back to back tallies to give the Highlanders a 2-1 lead. The teams would then exchange goals over the next 10 minutes of the first quarter. After Paul Chapman (Kemptville, ON, Canada, North Grenville District) scored to give Houghton a 3-2 lead, Wells scored twice, before Austin Andryshak put one past the keeper to make it 4-4.

However, the Houghton offense dried up as the first quarter wound down and the second quarter began. The Express scored four-straight goals, and after a Joshua Bailey (Millerton, PA, Williamson) tally, Wells scored three of the next four to go into the halftime break with am 11-6 lead.

Paul Chapman scored the first two goals of the third quarter to make it interesting, but Wells outscored the Highlanders 10-1 over the last 27 minutes of the game to claim the win.

The Chapman brothers finished with three goals each. Wells outshot Houghton, 53-33, and had a 47-39 edge in ground balls. Houghton won 20 of 34 faceoffs on the afternoon, with Nathan Moore (Kane, PA, Kane) going 19-for-31. Moore also finished with 12 ground balls.

Christopher Bucciarelli (Horseheads, NY, Horseheads) made 13 stops in net.

Houghton (0-3) is back in action on Saturday, March 19 when they host Ohio Northern at 1 p.m.
