AURORA, N.Y. -- Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora ) tied her own program-record with seven goals and teammate
Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) registered 10 assists to lead Houghton women's lacrosse to a 15-7 win over Wells College on Tuesday.
Zacchigna's record was set just one week ago in the team's first game of the season. Jones' assist total is the highest in NCAA Division III this season, but it's still two-short of the team-record 12 she set against Wells last season.
Against Wells, the Highlanders jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the game's first 12 minutes, with Zacchigna scoring three times,
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) twice, and Jones and
Torri Sperl (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) registering a goal apiece.
Houghton held a 10-2 lead at the break.
Each team scored five times in the second half, with Zacchigna putting three more into the net and Oswald and Sperl each scoring once.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast) played the first half and made four saves in net. Freshman
Alison Clark (Corning, NY, Corning) made two saves and allowed five goals in the second half.
Overall shots were 22-19 in favor of the Highlanders, while Wells had a 31-25 edge in ground balls.
Houghton (1-1) is back in action at Wilkes on Friday, March 11 at 7 p.m.
