WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Wilkes University scored the final three goals of the contest, the last coming 11 seconds into overtime, to knock off visiting Houghton women's lacrosse 8-7 Friday night.

The Highlanders led for most of the contest. Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora ) and Alyssa Strom (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) scored to put Houghton up 2-0 midway through the first half before the Colonels scored twice to even the score with 10:22 left in the half. Meghan Oswald scored with 1:27 on the clock to give Houghton a 3-2 lead at the break.

The visitors kept that momentum into the second half, as Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) scored twice in 30 seconds to push Houghton's lead to 5-2. After another Colonel goal, Oswald scored again for a 6-3 Highlander lead, before the hosts scored twice more over a two-minute span to pull to within a goal (6-4). Oswald put the cushion back to two goals, but the Colonels scored at the 11:36 and 8:06 marks to tie the game at seven.

It didn't take Wilkes long to get the victory during the extra session, winning the draw to start overtime and putting their first shot into the net with just 11 seconds gone.

Oswald led the Highlanders with three goals, Jones scored twice and added an assist, while Zacchigna tallied a goal and two assists.

Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast) made 11 saves in net.

Houghton (1-2) returns to action when they host Cazenovia on Wednesday, March 16 at 7 p.m.
