Roos Jump Past Highlanders, 16-10, in Women's Lacrosse

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- A game of runs finished in favor of the visitors as the SUNY Canton Roos knocked off Houghton, 16-10, in women's lacrosse action Thursday at Burke Field.

The Roos jumped out early, scoring their first goal just 31 seconds into the contest and adding another before the game was a minute and a half old. The Highlanders responded with three-straight tallies as Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora ) scored twice and Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) added another to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.

Canton would score twice more to regain the lead before Zacchigna and Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) went back to back to put Houghton back up by one. After six scoreless minutes, the Roos knotted the score at five at the 1:45 mark and went ahead by one (6-5) with a goal with eight seconds left.

The momentum that the Roos gained at the end of the first half continued into the second as the visitors scored five-straight goals over a five-minute span to take a commanding 11-5 lead with 22:54 left on the clock.

Houghton responded with its own four-goal run, with Zacchigna tallying twice and Oswald and Jones each netting one. However, the momentum shifted again back to the Roos, who scored five more goals to go up 16-9. Brooke Turner (West Seneca, NY, West Seneca West) scored her first of the year to round out the scoring just under the three minute mark.

Zacchigna finished with five goals, while Jones added two goals and three assists. Oswald tallied two goals and an assist while leading the team with five draw controls.

The Roos outshot the Highlanders 34-25 and had a 25-17 edge in ground balls.

Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast) made 13 saves in 57 minutes. Alison Clark (Corning, NY, Corning) didn't need to make a stop in three minutes of action.
