SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Houghton men's lacrosse came out on top of a back and forth affair against Lyndon State (Vt.), 10-8, in a game played in Springfield, Mass., on Tuesday.
After staking the Hornets to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, the Highlanders responed with three-straight goals. Austin Andryshak scored the first two, with Paul Chapman netting the third. Lyndon State scored the next two goals to go back up 4-3, but Andryshak scored the final goal of the second quarter with 1:57 left to send the game into halftime deadlocked at 4-4.
Shots were fairly even over the first 30 minutes with the Hornets holding a 19-18 edge.
Andryshak scored his fourth of the game just over a minute into the third quarter to give Houghton a one-goal edge. The team's exchanged goals over the final minutes of the third quarter, with Chapman and Andryshak each scoring to give Houghton 7-6 lead heading into the final frame. Chapman scored his third of the day to push the lead to 8-6 three minutes into the fourth.
The Hornets would pull within one on two occasions over the final mintues of the fourth quarter, but Houghton responded each time to restore the two-goal lead. Cole Chapman netted the first response and Paul Chapman closed the scoring with 2:37 left.
Final shots were in favor of Lyndon State, 42-36. Lyndon State also had the edge in ground balls, 25-21.
Andryshak finished with a season-high five goals, while Paul Chapman scored four times.
Nathan Moore led the Highlanders with seven ground balls and was 11-18 on faceoffs.
Chris Bucciarelli made 10 stops in net.Â
Houghton (1-4) is back in action against Anna Maria College on Thursday in Paxton, Mass.
