HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Led by senior
Kelsie Ashley the Houghton College field hockey team snapped Washington & Jefferson's 10-game winning streak and five-game shutout streak, defeating the Presidents 1-0 in overtime Saturday in front of a Homecoming crowd at Burke Field. The win improved the Highlanders to 7-5 (2-3) while the Presidents drop to 10-1 (4-1).
Before Ashley's goal 9:30 into overtime W&J had not allowed a goal in over 450 minutes of play. Ashley would drive hard and fast towards the goal, fake out the keeper and score quite possibly the most impressive goal for the Highlanders this season.
"I'm proud of the way these girls never gave up and fought against a very tough opponent. To get a result like that against such a good team shows there are good things to come if we can keep fighting." said Highlander Head Coach
Hannah Ogden.
Despite being outshot 8-0 in the first half, the Highlander defense held firm to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
The momentum shifted toward the Highlanders in the second half. Houghton outshot the Presidents 5-1 in the second half and 3-0 in the extra session. The final shot came after a restart from the sideline.
Ashley Hughes found Ashley moving toward the left side of the circle. The senior found a lane past the defenders and angled toward the left post. When the keeper slid toward the post, Ashley pulled the ball back to the right and put it in the open net while falling toward the turf.
