HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- The Houghton College field hockey team dropped a hard fought battle to the Cortland Red Dragons in Thursday night action at Burke Field. The now 8-3 Red Dragons held on for a 2-1 victory against the now 6-5 Highlanders.
The Red Dragons opened up the scoring when Meg Redmond received a penalty corner pass from Gabby Stein and blasted a shot from the top of the circle past Highlander Goalie. Just five minutes later on a pass from Stein, Jessica Welsh would squeak a shot past the Highlander defense and give the Red Dragons a 2-0 advantage.
From there on the match would be quiet until the 54th minute when
Grace Lee would speed past the Cortland defense and goalkeeper Kailynne Reinoehl and flick a shot into the back of the goal to put the Highlanders on the board.
Unfortunately that would be all the Highlanders would get for the rest of the night.
In goal,
Elizabeth Piszker allowed two goals with two saves.
Ashley Hughes would also help out with a defensive save of her own.
Reinoehl would allow just one goal and one save.
The Highlanders continue conference play with a match-up again Washington and Jefferson at home on Burke Field at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8.
