Nazareth Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Highlanders

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – A second half surge by the Nazareth College Golden Flyers pushed them past the Houghton Highlanders on Tuesday night, 59-76.
 
With one minute remaining in the first half Madison Detwiler (Williamsburg, PA, Williamsburg HS) sank a layup to put the Highlanders up by four.  On the ensuing possession, Veronica Peck nailed a deep three to pull the Flyers within one.
 
After a Houghton turnover, Kelly Lindsey drew a foul with one second remaining on the clock and promptly sank both free throws to give the Golden Flyers a one point lead at the half.
 
Houghton kept the game close through the first five minutes of the second half, staying within three points before Nazareth finished the third quarter on a 12-3 run.
 
The Golden Flyers continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Highlanders 22-15.

The Highlanders:
      >Elle Reed (Sherman, NY, Sherman Central School) scored 21 points and added four assists.
      >Freshman Brittany Lenart (Panama, NY, Panama HS) posted 14 points and four assists, and senior Hannah Manwaring contributed seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
 
The Golden Flyers:
      >Sam Gorge and Kelly Lindsey scored 23 and 20 points, respectively.  Kelly also collected nine rebounds.
      >Samantha Peebles added 16 points and five steals.
       
Stat Analysis:
      >Nazareth held an 11-20 advantage in turnovers, converting 22 points off takeaways to Houghton's fifteen.
      >While Houghton held a higher shooting percentage than their opponent for the game (42 percent vs. 39.7 percent), the Golden Flyers took 18 more shots from the field and converted six more than the Highlanders.
      >Foul shooting down the stretch proved another difference maker.  While the Highlanders made only 3-of-9 from the charity stripe in the second half, the Golden Flyers sank 8-of-9.
