Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Shattell, Gabriele Lead Attack in Highlander Victory

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Another hot, muggy night played right into Coach David Lewis' hands… again, as Houghton women's soccer outlasted Penn State-Behrend, 2-0, in their season home opener Tuesday afternoon.

In what looked like a repeat of Saturday afternoon, Coach Lewis subbed liberally, especially in the first half, utilizing seven players off his bench.

The early minutes the game saw little offensive attack, with neither team registering a shot until seven minutes into the contest.

The Lions looked to strike first, crossing a ball from the left flank into the box, only to see a miss-kick leave them empty-handed.

From there the Highlanders picked up the pace.  Over the next 25 minutes, Houghton would outshoot the Lions 5-0, along with four corner kicks, dominating the pace of play.

In the 32nd minute Sarah Gabriele took a ball at the top of the box, beat an opponent with a spin move to her right, then slid the ball through two defenders to Bailey Shattell who ripped a shot past the keeper into the left side netting.

"It was great to see Bailey play so well today," said Coach Lewis, "She really led the attack and our girls just seemed to do a much better job of finding each other."

Both teams would muster a few more chances, but the score stayed 1-0 Houghton heading into the half.

In the second half both teams subbed in mass, often swapping three-to-five players at a time, trying to generate new scoring opportunities and match up defensively.

After trading opportunities for nearly twenty minutes, the Highlanders made a run down the right side of the field into the offensive third, and headed toward the box.  A foul just outside the corner gave Houghton a free kick opportunity and Gabriele bent a perfect shot over the keeper's outstretched arms and into the upper left corner of the goal.

For Gabriele it was her second goal on the season.

The Highlanders finished the game with advantages in both shots (19-8) and corner kicks (8-1).

Houghton goaltender Shawna Sprout would need only one save in net as she and the Highlander defense completed their second consecutive shutout.

The Highlanders are back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Newport News, VA to take on the Captains of Christopher Newport University.
