NEWPORT NEWS, VA—Christopher Newport University collected goals from three different players as they defeated the Houghton College women's soccer team 3-0. 
 
The Captains improved to 3-0-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Highlanders to 2-2.
 
In the opening frame, the Captains owned the stat board, outshooting the Highlanders 13-1, including seven on goal.  Houghton goalkeeper Shawna Sprout (Portville, NY, Portville Central) turned away six shots, with the lone goal coming on corner kick played the near post and headed home by Gabby Gillis.
 
Sprout would finish the game with seven saves.
 
While the second half saw improved play from the Highlanders, the Captains scored an early insurance goal of the boot of their leading scorer, Victoria Perry.
 
Houghton collected five shots in the second half, including two each by Sarah Gabriele (Mahwah, NJ, Eastern Christian) and Nikki Garns (Chambersburg, PA, Greencastle-Antrim), but could not find the net.
 
The Captains delivered the final blow in the 80^th minute when freshman Arial Gardner punched home a shot from just outside the keeper's box.
 
The Highlanders match up against the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins (1-3) on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
