BROCKPORT, N.Y.– It was a busy first week for Houghton volleyball, playing six matches in five days, but the Highlanders battled tough against strong competition.
On Saturday, the team wrapped up the week with a 1-1 record at the Brockport Tournament.
The Highlanders lost to Gordon College 1-3 (24-26, 22-25, 25-17, 26-28) and then bounced back to defeat Skidmore College 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-16).
In the first match, Houghton had game point in three of the four sets but was only to finish out one for the win. The Highlanders led 24-22 in the first and fourth games, but gave up the final four points in game one and couldn't convert two more decisive points in dropping a long fourth game.
Naomi Prentice (Linwood, NY, York Central) led the attack with 14 kills, while
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) added 13 kills and 17 digs.
Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) spearheaded the offense with 45 assists.
Against Skidmore, the Highlanders were tired but again got strong performances from Burgher (14 kills, 16 digs) and Prentice (12 kills, 5 blocks).
