ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Houghton College volleyball lost to University of Rochester, 0-3 (19-25, 18-25, 16-25) and defeated Oswego State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-19) on the first day of the University of Rochester Volleyball Invitational on Friday night.
Houghton's record now stands at 3-5 on the season.
In Friday's first match against Rochester, the Highlanders struggled to create any offense, with
Hattie Burgher (Selkirk, NY, Loudonville Christian) leading the team with just six kills.
Anna Coryell (Phelps, NY, Midlakes) finished with 17 digs in the match.
The team was able to rebound with a strong performance against the Lakers of Oswego. Burgher's double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs paved the way for the Highlanders.
Erica Barney (Vestal, NY, Vestal) produced seven kills and 13 digs, while Coryell chipped in with 21 assists and 12 digs.
"It was a rough first match. We really struggled to serve receive, which totally took us out of the game because we couldn't get any kind of offense," said Head Coach Nancy Cole. "We lost as a team. Then we bounced back and played a great game against Oswego, winning in three. We passed really well which gave Anna multiple opportunities to run hitters. The team created a ton of energy and meshed well with each other."
Houghton will take on Hamilton College at 11 a.m. and Geneseo State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
