Depth Propels Highlanders to Victory in Second Half

LANCASTER, PA—It was a tale of two halves at Charger Field on Saturday afternoon.

In the first half the Highlanders displayed their characteristic possession-style offense but failed to generate many scoring opportunities, producing only six shots on goal.

While the Chargers mustered only four shots in the first half, two of them could very well have given LBC the lead, had it not been for the outstanding play of Houghton keeper Shawna Sprout.

In the 25th minute a header off a corner kick seemed destined for the Houghton goal, but Sprout deflected the ball wide of the net.

Only two minutes later Charger freshman Alexa Evans broke free into the box with only Sprout between her and the goal, but Sprout deftly defended the net again sending both teams into the half with a scoreless tie.

Sprout finished the half with four saves.  She would not get another opportunity in the remainder of the game.

With the heat and humidity affecting both sides, Coach David Lewis turned to his bench to preserve the strength of his starters.  While only four bench players saw the field for the Chargers, Lewis strategically utilized nine different players off his bench.

Houghton would own the second half, outshooting their opponents 21-0 and dominating time of possession.

Finally, in the 60th minute, Sarah Gabriele gave the Highlanders the lead when she collected a ball just outside the 18, beat a defender with a touch and placed a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

With just over five minutes remaining on the clock Houghton struck again.  Darlene Eckhardt received a through-ball from Jennifer Zacchigna then curled a shot past the keeper.

The Highlanders take the field again on Tuesday, September 8 when they host Penn State University – Behrend at 4:00 PM at Burke Field.
