HOUGHTON, NY – Neither steady rain nor the loss of their starting goalkeeper deterred the Highlanders field hockey team, as they defeated SUNY Brockport 3-0 Wednesday night on Burke Field.
The win brings Houghton back to .500 at 4-4, 1-3 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Eagles drop to 1-9, 1-1 in the SUNYAC.
With starting goalkeeper
Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara) on the disabled list for the second straight game, backup keeper
Elizabeth Modesto (San Diego, CA, Point Loma HS) was forced into action once again.
Modesto, who started the first six games of the season in the back for the Highlanders, earned her first career shutout, collecting four saves in the victory.
"I was thrilled that the ladies had a shut out tonight," commented head coach Hannah Zgrablich, "It was well earned especially by the hard work of Liz Modesto and center back
Marissa Hollinger (Lancaster, PA, Manheim Township)."
On the offensive end, Houghton pressured early and often, firing 10 shots in the first half and 18 on the game.
Senior
Kristin McKane (Clayville, NY, Mount Markham) broke the scoreless tie in the ninth minute. After a scramble in the circle saw multiple shots fired, McKane cleaned up a rebound off the goalie's pads, burying the ball into the back of the cage.
Midway through the second half the Highlanders struck again off a corner. Hollinger played the ball in and
Kelsie Ashley (Landisville, PA, Hempfield HS) ripped a shot from the top of the circle. Hollinger quickly moved into position and deflected the ball just inside the corner of the post for her third goal of the season.
McKane and the Highlanders finished their attack with only 1:40 remaining on the clock.
Ashley Hughes (Fairport, NY, Fairport High School) laced a shot to the opposite post and McKane one-timed a shot past the keeper for her second goal of the night, sixth of the season.
Zgrablich praised her team's efforts, stating, "Our midfield and forward line connected extremely well creating multiple offensive opportunities. The girls applied great pressure in the offensive half the whole game."
Houghton plays again this Saturday, October 3
rd, when they travel to Rochester to take on conference rival Nazareth College at 12:00p.m.
