Field Hockey Grabs 2-1 OT Win at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Ashley Hughes (Fairport, NY, Fairport High School) provided the heroics with an overtime goal to give Houghton field hockey a 2-1 win over Nazareth on Saturday.

The goal came 7:33 into extra time.

The Golden Flyers got on the board first in the 17th minute, but Houghton was able to respond with the equalizer just over eight minutes later when freshman Nicole Jennings (Vestal, NY, Vestal High School ) converted off a pass from Kristin McKane (Clayville, NY, Mount Markham).

Houghton outshot Nazareth, 7-5, in the opening half, and the shots were even at six apiece over the final 35 minutes of regulation.

In overtime, the guests were able to get off three shots over the first six minutes and gave up one shot to Nazareth before Hughes put the winner into the net. It was her second goal of the season.

The Highlanders held a 17-12 shots advantage including a 12-7 edge in shots on goal. Penalty corners were 9-5 in favor of Houghton.

Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara), who missed the last two games with an injury, returned to the cage and recorded six saves to get the win.

It was a key win for the Highlanders, who improved to 5-4 overall and now hold a 2-3 record in conference play.

Houghton next hosts SUNY Morrisville on Tuesday, Oct. 6 to start a stretch of three-straight non-conference games.
