Highlanders Shut Out Panthers

BRADFORD, PA – Jordan Mullen (Fillmore, NY, Fillmore) scored two goals and Ben Lawrence (Marlborough, CT, RHAM High School) added a third as the Highlanders (4-3-1) men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shut out over the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford (1-4-1) Wednesday afternoon.

Houghton went on the offensive early, peppering the Panthers net with nine shots in the first half, including two that drew iron, but went into the half in a scoreless draw.

Less than seven minutes into the second half Mitch Beattie (Maitland, Ontario, St. Mary Catholic) crossed a ball from the left wing to Zach Shilvock (Alexander, NY, Alexander Central School) on the opposite post.  Shilvock headed the ball across the goal to a waiting Lawrence, who ripped the ball into the back of the net to give the Highlanders the eventual game-winning goal.

Just over eight minutes later Lawrence played a pass to Mullen's feet at the top of the box.  Mullen turned on his opponent, cut the ball back to his left foot and hit his shot past the keeper.

In the 82nd minute Mullen would add one more.  Andrew Bussey (Leicester, England, Rosslyn Academy) took a ball from the left side and switched it through the midfield to Tyler Groff (Millersville, PA, Penn Manor) on the right wing.  Groff hit a quick one-time cross to Mullen on the left side, who finished his sixth goal of the year.

"I was impressed with our patience," commented Coach Matthew Webb, "We waited for things to open up, then created chances."

Webb shuffled the lineup to start the day, moving Nic Loew (Center Valley, PA, Southern Lehigh) and Josiah Granger (Lansing, MI, Lansing Christian) to the back.  "Jesse Toth (Victor, NY, Victor) did a great job of organizing our backs," said Webb.  "He had two guys who had very little experience back there and held the other team to two shots."

The shutout was the Highlanders second on the season.

The men will next travel to Hoboken, NJ on Saturday to take on the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at 3:00 p.m.
