AURORA, N.Y. -- The 2015 season got off to a great start for Houghton field hockey as the Highlanders grabbed a 2-0 win over Wells College on the road Tuesday.
Wells opened the game with three shots over the first nine minutes, but two were blocked and Houghton keeper
Elizabeth Piszker (Glens Mills, PA, Cardinal O'Hara) came up with a save on the third Express attempt.
Houghton's first shot of the contest found paydirt as senior
Kristin McKane (Clayville, NY, Mount Markham) opened the scoring in the 11th minute, tipping in a cross from freshman
Nicole Jennings (Vestal, NY, Vestal High School ) to put the visitors up 1-0.
The Highlanders found the net again on their second shot, this time by freshman
Seoyoung Je (Uganda, Africa , Rift Valley Academy ), who tipped in a feed from
Kelsie Ashley (Landisville, PA, Hempfield HS) with just over a minute remaining in the opening half.
That 2-0 lead would last the rest of the way for the Highlanders, who outshot the Express 3-1 after the break.
Shots were even at five apiece for the contest. Houghton held a 6-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Piszker made one save to tally the shutout.
