The Houghton College baseball team lost both games of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the St. John Fisher Cardinals. The Highlanders lost game one 14-2 and game two 16-6.
In game one the Highlanders were led by
Enrico Sukhdeo (Georgetown, Guyana, Ashbrook) and
Ethan Duryea (Concord, OH, Cornerstone Christian). Sukhdeo went one for four with a RBI and Duryea went one for one with a RBI. The loss was credited to
Kevin Cassar (Mississauga, ON, Canada, Our Lord of Mount Carmel) and Stephen Lewis earned the win for the Cardinals.
In game two the Highlanders were led by Sukhdeo,
Michael Kerr (Brentwood, TN, Hamburg ), and
Michael Knapp (Brockport, NY, Brockport). Sukhdeo went two for five with two RBI, Kerr went one for five with a two run home run, and Knapp went two for five with a RBI.
Jared Knowlton (Gouverneur, NY, Gouverneur ) was given the loss and Marc Iseneker was credited with the win.
The two losses make the Highlanders 17-20 on the year and the Cardinals are now 20-17.
In game one the Cardinals scored nine runs in the first inning, two in the second, and three in the sixth to take a 14-0 lead going into the seventh.
In the seventh
Garret Kirkpatrick (York, PA, Central York) started things off with an infield single and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With runners on first and second Duryea hit a single to right field that scored Kirkpatrick from second and Sukhdeo followed that up with a RBI single. The Cardinals' pitcher then got a ground ball to end the game.
In game two the Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the first, but the Highlanders got one back in top of the second when
Christopher McKay (Oakville, ON, Canada, Homeschool) scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Cardinals continued to score runs though, scoring three in the second and five in the fifth to take a 12-1 lead.
After a scoreless sixth the Highlanders rallied in the seventh scoring five runs on four hits. The rally was highlighted by Sukhdeo's two RBI triple and Kerr's two run homer.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the eighth and the Cardinal's closer sat the Highlanders down in order in the ninth.
The Highlanders will wait to find out who they play in the Empire 8 Baseball Tournament at Utica College next weekend starting Friday, May 8.
