Highlanders Lose to Stevens on First Day of E8 Baseball Tournament

UTICA, N.Y. -- Houghton baseball couldn't recover after giving up three runs in the bottom of the first and dropped a 4-2 decision to #2 seed Stevens Institute of Technology (28-13) on Day 1 of the inaugural Empire 8 Postseason Baseball Tournament hosted by Utica College on Thursday.

Enrico Sukhdeo and Bryan Hodge led the fifth-seeded Highlanders with two hits and an RBI each. Hodge also scored a run. Seth Cornell pitched a complete game, surrendering four earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out two and walked two.

The Highlanders were able to get two hits in the top of the first and had the bases loaded with no outs, but the final three batters of the inning each struck out to end the threat. The Ducks capitalized on four Houghton errors in the bottom half of the inning while totaling four hits to get a 3-0 lead.

The next five innings was a pitchers' battle between Highlander ace Seth Cornell and the Ducks' starter Robert Robbins. Cornell gave up just four hits, while Robbins surrendered just two hits from the second through the sixth. Unforunately for Cornell and the Highlanders, three of those hits came in the fifth inning and resulted in the fourth Ducks run.

Down 4-0, Houghton bats came alive in the seventh as the team got hits from Bryan Hodge, Chris McKay and Enrico Sukhdeo. Sukhdeo's single drove in Hodge from third.

Cornell retired the side in the bottom half of the inning. With three more hits, Houghton was able to score another run in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit in half. Tage Johnson and Brett Rapan each singled, with Johnson coming home on a base hit from Hodge.

Stevens left two runners on after tallying two hits in the eighth, but Houghton couldn't get a runner in scoring position in the ninth as a ground out, strike out and a fielder's choice ended the game.

Houghton (17-21) will take on No. 7 seed SUNY Canton at 10 a.m. Friday with a chance to advance to Saturday's third place game on the line. After earning a play-in win against No. 6 Elmira, Canton lost to top-seed Ithaca 19-9 earlier Thursday.

To get to the third place game, Houghton not only needs a win against Canton, but needs a loss by Utica in Friday's other 10 a.m. contest. No. 4 Utica, which lost to No. 3 St. John Fisher, 6-1, on Thursday will take on top-seed Ithaca. A Houghton loss or a Utica win will put the Highlanders into the fifth place game on Friday at 2 p.m.
