CANTON, N.Y. -- Houghton women's lacrosse dropped a 15-10 decision on the road to SUNY Cantion on Thursday.
Houghton went up 1-0 on a goal from
Elizabeth Westwood (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) and got two goals from
Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and another from
Bethany Kuiken (Pompton Plains, NJ, Eastern Christian) to grab a 4-3 lead with just over 11 minutes to go in the first half. However, the host Roos scored five times over the final eight minutes of the half to take an 8-4 lead into the break.
Houghton was outshot19-8 in the first half.
The Highlanders got two goals apiece from
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman)Â and Zacchigna and single tallies from Westwood and
Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) in the second half, but the Roos scored seven times over the final 30 minutes to claim the win.
Zacchigna finished with four goals, five ground balls, six caused turnovers and six draw controls. Jones tallied a goal and six assists.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast ) stopped 18 shots in net.
The Roos held a 40-21 advantage in shots and a 36-27 edge in ground balls.
The Highlanders (4-5) are back in action on Wednesday, April 8 at Hilbert.
