Chapman's Nine Goals Not Enough to Get Houghton a Victory

HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Two records by Houghton sophomore Paul Chapman weren't enough to spell victory for the Highlanders, who lost a heartbreaking contest, 18-17, to Alfred State on Saturday.

The Pioneers scored three times over the game's final two minutes to get the one-goal win.

The visitors had to overcome Chapman's record-setting offensive performance. Chapman scored nine goals on the afternoon to break the school record and also broke the program record for goals in a season. His fifth tally of the game sent him past Tyler Kempney, who scored 36 in 2013. Chapman now has 41 goals on the season. Kempney also held the previous record for goals in a game with eight (2013 vs. Lyndon State).

Chapman put Houghton up early with two goals in the first two minutes, but the Pioneers answered with three-straight to take a 3-2 lead. The teams continued to battle goal for goal through the rest of the first quarter. The first 15 minutes ended tied at six.

Houghton looked to gain control in the second quarter, edging out to an 11-7 lead thanks to three more goals from Chapman and solo tallies from Justin Flint and Sean Daigler. The Highlanders took an 11-8 lead into halftime.

Goals from Chapman and Daigler gave the Highlanders a comfortable 13-8 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Pioneers battled back, outscoring Houghton 5-2 over the rest of the third. Chapman scored two more times in the quarter.

Down 15-13 to start the fourth, the Pioneers scored down a man in the first minute to pull within one, but Daigler scored to push the advantage back to two. The team's exchanged goals over the next two minutes, giving Houghton a 17-15 lead with 8:35 to go. The lead was still two with 2:04 left when the Pioneers mounted their late comeback. The visitors tied the game at 17 with 43 seconds to go and found the game-winner with just 21 ticks left on the clock.

Chapman finished with nine goals and two assists, Daigler added four goals and Flint contributed three goals and two assists.

After outshooting the Pioneers, 26-24, in the first half, the Highlanders were outshot, 40-9, over the game's final 30 minutes. The game could have been out of hand in favor of the Pioneers, if not for the play of Houghton keeper Josh Haingray. The senior keeper stopped 24 shots on the afternoon, including 20 in the second half.

Houghton lost 28 of 39 faceoffs and gained just 29 groundballs, compared to 43 for the Pioneers.

The Highlanders return to action for their final home game of the season on Wednesday, April 22 against Nazareth.
