HOUGHTON, N.Y.-- Houghton women's lacrosse had control early, but couldn't come up with a win over Hartwick College on Saturday. The Hawks used a big run to grab the 17-12 win.
After going up 7-5 with 5:12 left in the first half, the Highlanders gave up three late first-half goals to go down 8-7 at the break. Houghton pulled even with a goal less than a minute into the second half, but gave up seven-straight to Hartwick that gave the visitors control. The Highlanders scored four of the game's final six goals, but the Hawks stalled the ball on the offensive end to run time off the clock.
Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) led the Highlanders with five goals and an assist.
Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) added two goals and three assists, while
Elizabeth Westwood (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) and
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) each scored twice.
Hartwick outshot the Highlanders, 37-24, and groundballs were even at 25 apiece.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast ) made 14 stops in net.
Houghton returns to action at home versus Stevens Tech on Friday, April 17.
