ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Houghton men's lacrosse was unable to maintain a one-goal halftime lead as they dropped a 14-7 decision to Elmira College in Empire 8 action on Wednesday.
The Highlanders got a strong performance between the pipes from goalkeeper
Josh Haingray (Houghton, NY , Houghton Academy ), who stopped 25 Soaring Eagle shots.
The visitors jumped ahead 2-0 early with goals from
Sean Daigler (Elma, NY , Iroquois High School) and
Justin Flint (Endicott, NY , Union Endicott High School) and led 2-1 at the end of the first. The teams each scored three goals in the second period. Flint scored his second of the game and
Paul Chapman (Kemptville, ON, Canada, North Greenville District High School) added two more to give the Highlanders a 5-4 edge at the half.
Elmira outshot the Highlanders 27-9 in the first half, with Haingray making 11 stops in net to keep the visitors in the game.
However, the Soaring Eagles found their attack in the third quarter, outshooting Houghton 19-5 and putting seven goals in the back of the net. Houghton did not manage a third period goal.
Houghton found more firepower in the fourth, outshooting Elmira 14-11 and getting goals from Chapman and
Josh Bailey (Millerton, PA , Williamson High SSchool ). Elmira scored three times in the fourth to grab the win.
Shots finished 57-28 in favor of Elmira. The Soaring Eagles also won 17 of 24 faceoffs and had a 57-25 advantage in groundballs.
