ALFRED, N.Y. -- A day after getting shutout on the road, Houghton women's lacrosse bounced back with a 14-8 win over Alfred University in Empire 8 action Saturday.
The win puts the Highlanders back at .500 with a 4-4 mark and a 2-1 record in E8 play.
Houghton fell behind 2-0 in this one after just four minutes and trailed 3-1 with 24:38 to play in the first half before the offense finally found its groove. The Highlanders got two goals apiece from
Jennifer Zacchigna (East Aurora, NY, East Aurora) and
Chandler Jones (Collegeville, PA, Spring-Ford) to grab a 5-3, and after another Saxon score, Houghton scored four more times to head into the locker room with a 9-4 advantage.
Elizabeth Westwood (Saugerties, NY, Saugerties) scored twice and Zacchigna added two more to give her four scores in the first half.
Alyssa Strom (Tonawanda, NY, Sweet Home) scored just 22 seconds into the second stanza, and after the Saxons pulled to within 10-5, the Highlanders got a goal from
Meghan Oswald (Penn Yan, NY, Marcus Whitman) and two more from Westwood to go up 13-5. The host Saxons scored three-straight to make it interesting, but freshman
Bethany Kuiken (Pompton Plains, NJ, Eastern Christian) got her first-career goal to finish the scoring.
Jones finished with three goals and three assists, while Zacchigna and Westwood each scored four times. Zacchigna and Oswald tallied six and five draw controls, respectively.
Kourtnie Franklin (Belfast, NY, Belfast ) stopped 12 shots to pick up the win in net.
Houghton (4-4; 2-1 E8) is back in action at SUNY Canton on Thursday, April 2.
